As latter-day saints, we believe that our purpose here on Earth is to strive to perfect ourselves, so we may be able to return to our Father in Heaven, and enter into the Celestial Kingdom. The way we can do this is by keeping the commandments of God, following his plan, and enduring to the end. One of the greatest commandments we have been given is to multiply and replenish the Earth, and marriage is the essential medium by which we obey this commandment correctly.
In The Family: A Proclamation to the World, it states that "God has commanded that the sacred powers of procreation are to be employed only between man and woman, lawfully wedded as husband and wife". God's most sacred and beloved creations are his children; and he loves his children so much that he gave us our most Godly trait as humans, the power of procreation. Heavenly Father knew that nothing on Earth would offer us greater joy than to create life –together –with the person we have made sacred covenants with. He knows that through creating life and loving our own children, we will be able to approach to a greater understanding of his love for us his children.
What is so beautiful about man and woman's purpose, is that it takes two people, two opposite genders to come together to create life. Male and female spirits complete, unify and perfect each other –and by divine design, the physical expression of that unity can bring a couple even closer together when they use this sacred act to create life, together. Marriage is an essential part of Heavenly Father's plan because it is only under the covenant of marriage that children should come into this world, and only as a result of marriage that we experience the immeasurable joys of creating life, and a family.
